Summary

Chapter 3 covers frameworks for multimedia standardization. Due to the increasing demand for multimedia services, multimedia standardization has drawn tremendous attention. Firstly, ITU MEDIACOM2004 framework for multimedia standardization is presented. A framework includes application layer, middleware layer and network layer. After that, we present an overview of ETSI standardization and describe various standardization projects with regard to applications, middleware and networks. Next, we will discuss the key elements defined in MPEG-21 multimedia framework: digital item declaration, identification and description, content handling and usage, intellectual property management and protection, content representation and event reporting.
