Summary

A personal retrospective by decades of the work in the W. E. Wentworth laboratories and a presentation of the advances made in the past fifteen years that constitute the major part of this book are summarized. This gives our impression of the application of the scientific method by Wentworth and passed on to his students and colleagues. The development of chromatography beginning with Tswett, continuing to A. J. Martin and J. E. Lovelock with the invention of the electron capture detector is reviewed. The evolution of the mechanism of the electron capture detector is presented and applied to other areas of chemistry. The status of problems studied at the time and related work by others are summarized.
