Summary

The early discovery phase of research is not amenable to many project management tools and techniques. However, as work moves “downstream” towards a tangible output, these techniques become increasingly useful. The formal collaboration aspects of project management—including team size, structure, and roles—are presented. Then, leadership challenges over a “typical” project life cycle are discussed, particularly leadership style and communication.
