In this chapter colorants, dyes and pigments, and the results of their mixture are introduced. The non-linear transformations from transmittance and reflectance functions to functions that are additive, the Lambert-Beer law and the Kubelka-Munk law, are presented, as are the colorimetric properties of colorants and the results of their mixture. Special colorants and modifying additives briefly discussed include fluorescents and metallic flake and pearlescent additives.
