Summary

Chapter 9 amplifies the discussions of amide carbonyls at the end of Chapter 8 and extends the coverage to all the group frequencies derived from amide systems. This includes the N[BOND]H stretching and bending modes and of particular interest is the case of secondary amides which undergo coupling of the C[BOND]N stretch and the N[BOND]H in-plane bend to give two bands. Lactam systems are also considered at this point and are followed by the carboxylate ion that has two modes in the same general region as the amides. Finally, C[BOND]O single bond systems including ethers, esters, anhydrides, and peroxides are examined.
