In order to provide the background for nonequilibrium thermodynamics, the fundamentals of equilibrium thermodynamics are outlined. Equilibrium thermodynamics must not only be obtained as a special case of any acceptable nonequilibrium generalization but, through its shining example, it also elucidates the wide scope, the emphasis on universal relationships, and the advantages of a systematic postulational approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics. This appendix is based on Callen's famous textbook entitled “Thermodynamics and an Introduction to Thermostatistics” (Wiley, New York, 1985). The present crash-course follows Callen's clearly structured and widely accepted postulational approach as closely as possible.
