This chapter has two parts. The first part introduces some basic statistical concepts and terminologies for the convenience of those readers who do not know or remember some of them well; the second part discusses some of the conventional data smoothing procedures, including kernel smoothing procedures, local polynomial kernel smoothing procedures, spline smoothing procedures, and discrete wavelet transformation and thresholding procedures.
