Summary

The primary components in the process of image formation, viz., illumination, reflectance models of the surfaces, and finally the process of image formation at the retina of the eyes or the sensor plane of the camera have been briefly reviewed in this chapter. A brief yet comprehensive description of the process of sampling and quantization have been discussed. Binary images find many applications in image processing. The properties of binary images and some important operations on binary images, such as connected component labeling have been reviewed here. A brief overview of three-dimensional imaging, including stereo and range images have been discussed. There are a number of standards in which one may store the images in files and retrieve them from files. These are known as image file format standards. The important file formats used most frequently have been discussed at length. The chapter concludes with a note on some of the basic operations on images.
