Summary
Health care professionals need to understand the limitations and applications of genetic testing, predictions of clinical significance and be able to accurately convey that information to the patient. The goals of genetic counseling and the nature of the physician-patient relationship are reexamined from the perspectives of trust, nondirectiveness, and informed choice.
