Appendix A provides a course in elementary functional analysis required for the study of modern partial differential equations and finite element methods. Covered are the most important facts, techniques and theorems in finite- and infinite-dimensional linear spaces, normed spaces, Banach spaces, Lebesgue spaces, inner product spaces, Hilbert spaces and Sobolev spaces. Prerequisites for this course have been reduced to a minimum of real analysis and linear (matrix) algebra, so that it can be taught to students of engineering, physics and other non-mathematical majors. The chapter contains many illustrating examples.
