Chapter 3 presents the classical (nodal) concept of finite elements, their unisolvency, construction of the unique nodal basis, local and global finite element interpolants, and conformity to spaces of functions. Discussed is the equivalence of finite elements. Presented are the most widely used linear triangular elements and bilinear quadrilateral elements in 2D, and the corresponding reference maps and their invertibility.
