Loss of fragile histidine triad gene expression is associated with progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, but not with the patient's prognosis and smoking history (pages 5–11)Yutaka Shimada, Fumiaki Sato, Go Watanabe, Seiji Yamasaki, Masayuki Kato, Masato Maeda and Masayuki Imamura
Article first published online: 13 NOV 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/1097-0142(20000701)89:1<5::AID-CNCR2>3.0.CO;2-Z
This study evaluated the clinical impact of the fragile histidine triad (FHIT) gene in 149 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients retrospectively using immunohistochemical analysis. The data suggested that FHIT protein expression was associated with progression of esophageal SCC; however, it may not be associated with the patient's prognosis.

Gastric lymphomas in Turkey : Analysis of prognostic factors with special emphasis on flow cytometric DNA content (pages 12–20)Zeynep Dilek Aydin, Ibrahim Barista, Hande Canpinar, Arzu Sungur and Gülten Tekuzman
Article first published online: 13 NOV 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/1097-0142(20000701)89:1<12::AID-CNCR3>3.0.CO;2-Y
To the authors' knowledge the current study is the first to demonstrate the prognostic significance of S-phase fraction (SPF) for gastric lymphomas and some distinct features of DNA flow cytometric analysis in Turkish gastric lymphoma patients. In addition to the lower percentage of aneuploid cases and higher SPFs found in this series of Turkish gastric lymphoma patients, the most distinguishing feature was DNA index values of aneuploid cases that all were < 1.0.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression in gastric carcinomas is frequent and is coexpressed with p53. P-gp seems not to be regulated by p53, but a loss of P-gp detected in some of these carcinomas is mainly associated with a lack of p53 protein accumulation.

The guaiac fecal occult blood test HemoccultSENSA, which does not require dietary restrictions, is significantly more sensitive for colorectal neoplasms than the immunochemical test FlexSure OBT, which is specific to human hemoglobin. (Both tests are manufactured by Beckman-Coulter Inc., Primary Care Diagnostics, Palo Alto, CA.) The former identifies more adenomas with a lower specificity, but it is still acceptable and suitable for population screening.

Six-year recurrence free survival after intraluminal iridium-192 therapy of human bilobar biliary papillomatosis : A case report (pages 69–73)Peter Gunvén, Jakob Gorsetman, Hans Ohlsén, Bengt-Inge Rudén, Göran Lundell and Lambert Skoog
Article first published online: 13 NOV 2000 | DOI: 10.1002/1097-0142(20000701)89:1<69::AID-CNCR10>3.0.CO;2-9
More than 6 years of recurrence free survival resulted from bulk reduction of bilobar biliary papillomatosis by cholangioscopic electrocoagulation followed by intraluminal iridium-192 brachytherapy. This seems to be the first case of successful nonoperative treatment of this exceedingly rare and mostly fatal disease; in this patient, the possibility of resecting the disease by a major liver resection would have been questionable.

Survival analysis of recurrent disease has shown that the surgical resection of local recurrence may provide acceptable results. The presence of multiple recurrences other than local recurrences represents a subgroup of patients with a poor prognosis. Follow-up is justified with the aim of detecting early local recurrence. Prognostic factors for recurrence include site of disease, lymph node involvement, time of recurrence, and multiple lesions.

Three major antioxidant enzymes—copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, manganese superoxide dismutase, and catalase—had lower expression in prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and prostate carcinoma than in benign epithelium. The findings of this study suggest that oxidative stress is an early event in carcinogenesis.
