This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the benefits and harms of organic nitrates at any dose or mode as compared with placebo or no intervention on the prevention of bleeding and re-bleeding in people with oesophageal varices. Additional interventions will be allowed if administered equally to all trial groups.
