This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:
To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can reduce the incidence of infectious complications following tooth extraction.
To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can be indicated in immunosuppressed patients (e.g. HIV infection, AIDS, diabetes, transplants) or patients with other conditions (e.g. bone diseases).
To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can be indicated in particular procedures, such as extraction of impacted teeth or wisdom teeth.
To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between the proportion/number of infectious complications in patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis compared with a group receiving no intervention/placebo against the alternative hypothesis of a difference.
