Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

  • To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can reduce the incidence of infectious complications following tooth extraction.

  • To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can be indicated in immunosuppressed patients (e.g. HIV infection, AIDS, diabetes, transplants) or patients with other conditions (e.g. bone diseases).

  • To investigate whether antibiotic prophylaxis can be indicated in particular procedures, such as extraction of impacted teeth or wisdom teeth.

  • To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference between the proportion/number of infectious complications in patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis compared with a group receiving no intervention/placebo against the alternative hypothesis of a difference.
