  2. Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

The primary objective of this systematic review is to compare the upper GI safety of currently available COX-2 inhibitors with that of non-selective NSAIDs (with or without the concomitant use of gastroprotective agents) and with that of placebo. The review will also consider the upper GI safety of COX-2 inhibitors compared to other COX-2 inhibitors.

Specifically the review aims to address the following questions:

  • As a group do the COX-2 inhibitors have less GI toxicity than standard NSAIDs overall?
  • Do the various COX-2 inhibitors have different degrees of GI toxicities? And therefore do certain standard NSAIDs have GI safety profiles that are similar to certain COX-2 inhibitors?
  • Does the use of a standard NSAID in combination with a gastroprotective agent (e.g. a proton pump inhibitor) offer similar or greater GI safety than COX-2 inhibitors used when used alone?
