Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

Primary objective
To compare chest pain observation unit care with (routine) emergency care in terms of morbidity (myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, urgent cardiac revascularization) and mortality (from all causes and due to cardiovascular diseases) in adult patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain

Secondary objectives
(1) To compare chest pain observation unit care with (routine) emergency care in terms of length of hospital stay, readmission rates in adult patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain;
(2) To compare chest pain observation unit care with (routine) emergency care in terms of quality of life and stress/anxiety in adult patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain;
(3) To estimate the mean cost saving per patient of chest pain units as compared to (routine) emergency care.
