Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To evaluate the use of systemic antibiotics as adjunctive therapy in non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis.
Primary objectives:
- to test the null hypothesis of no difference between mechanical debridement with adjunctive placebo and mechanical debridement with adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics;
- to test the null hypothesis of no difference between mechanical debridement with a particular adjunctive systemic antibiotic and mechanical debridement with comparative adjunctive systemic antibiotic (head to head comparison).
Secondary objectives:
- to report on post-operative adverse effects associated with systemic antibiotic therapy;
- to report patients' quality of life changes.
