  2. Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To review all randomized or quasi-randomized (not strictly randomized methods of allocation e.g., by date of birth, hospital record number or alternation) controlled trials pertaining to the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of acute postoperative pain. The three specific objectives of this systematic review are:

  1. to assess the efficacy of acupuncture compared to sham controls (i.e., sham acupuncture and other sham treatments) for postoperative pain.
  2. to assess the efficacy of acupuncture plus standard medical treatment compared to standard medical care alone for postoperative pain.
  3. to assess the efficacy of acupuncture compared to standard medical treatment for postoperative pain.

Standard medical care will be defined as the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), narcotics, or other analgesic medication, together with routine postoperative care.
