Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To determine the effect of prebiotics given to infants for the prevention of allergy or food hypersensitivity.
Secondary objectives are:

  • to determine the effect of specific prebiotics;

  • to determine the effect of prebiotics in 1) breast fed infants, 2) human milk fed infants, and 3) formula fed infants;

  • to determine the effect of prebiotics used for 1) early / short term infant feeding, and 2) prolonged infant feeding;

  • to determine the effect of prebiotics in 1) infants not selected for risk of allergy or food hypersensitivity, or at low risk, and 2) in infants at high risk of allergy or food hypersensitivity; and

  • to determine the effect of prebiotics given to 1) low birth weight or preterm infants, and 2) appropriate for gestation age term infants.
