Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the effects of treatment or prophylaxis of HSV infection on HIV transmission in three situations:

  1. For persons (heterosexual or homosexual) with HIV and HSV infection, the effects of suppressing HSV to decrease HIV shedding and the risk of transmission of HIV to HIV-uninfected partners;

  2. For persons (heterosexual or homosexual) without HIV but with HSV, the effects of suppressing HSV on the risk of acquiring HIV from an HIV-infected partner;

  3. For persons (heterosexual or homosexual) without either HIV or HSV, the effects of treatment with antiviral medications of these persons to reduce the risk of acquiring HSV and HIV from their HSV- and HIV-infected partners; and

  4. For persons (heterosexual or homosexual) with HIV and HSV infection, the effects of episodic treatment of genital ulcers on HIV shedding and the risk of transmission of HIV to HIV-uninfected partners.
