Abstract

  2. Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

This aim of this review is to examine if chewing gum after laparoscopic or open colorectal surgery reduces the duration of post-operative ileus and enhances post-operative recovery. The review will consider the impact of the intervention on indicators of restoration of bowel function (passage of flatus and faeces) and recovery (time to discharge). The review will also explore whether analgesic regime and surgical procedure (open vs closed) alters any effect of the intervention.
