This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

  • To determine the effectiveness of long-term opioid therapy for chronic noncancer pain;
  • to identify the adverse effects of long-term opioid therapy for chronic noncancer pain; and
  • to assess withdrawal rates from treatment by reasons for withdrawal based on patient statements.
