This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To determine the effectiveness, including tolerability and acceptibility, of alprazolam as monotherapy for major depression in comparison with placebo and conventional antidepressants antidepressant effect, in outpatients and patients in primary care.
