This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To compare the effect of different methods of cervical preparation used prior to first trimester surgical abortion on amount of cervical dilation achieved, length of procedure, side effects, satisfaction, and safety. Included trials will be those evaluating cervical preparation versus no preparation as well as comparisons between methods.
