This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To compare the efficacy of different antibiotic regimens (antibiotic monotherapies, monotherapy with combination therapy and combination therapies) on mortality and the need for surgery in the empirical treatment of neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis.
