This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

Primary objective

To quantify the dose-related effects of various doses and types of beta-1 selective beta adrenergic receptor blockers on systolic and diastolic blood pressure versus placebo in patients with primary hypertension.

Secondary objectives

  1. To determine the effects of beta-1 selective beta adrenergic receptor blockers on variability of blood pressure.
  2. To determine the effects of beta-1 selective beta adrenergic receptor blockers on pulse pressure.
  3. To quantify the dose-related effects of beta-1 selective beta adrenergic receptor blockers on heart rate.
  4. To quantify the effects of beta-1 selective beta adrenergic receptor blockers in different doses on withdrawals due to adverse events.
