Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

  1. To determine the effect of Chinese herbal medicines (with or without phototherapy) compared to placebo or conventional treatment (phototherapy or exchange transfusion) on bilirubin levels, the need for phototherapy or exchange transfusion and the incidence of bilirubin encephalopathy and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment.

  2. To determine the frequency and nature of side effects of Chinese herbal medicines when used to treat neonatal jaundice.

  3. To analyze in subgroups of term versus preterm (< 37 completed weeks of gestation) infants, hemolytic versus non-hemolytic causes of neonatal jaundice.
