Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the effects of stroke service interventions on modifiable risk factor control for the secondary prevention of stroke. Poor medication adherence can compromise secondary prevention by reducing the clinical benefits of long-term therapies (WHO 2003a). In the context of this review, 'modifiable risk factors' will therefore refer to:

  • clinical conditions (hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, atrial fibrillation, diabetes and obesity);

  • lifestyle factors (smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and excess alcohol consumption);

  • patient non-adherence to secondary prevention medications.
