Abstract

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows:

Primary objective

  1. To determine the effect of standardised neonatal resuscitation training programs in reducing neonatal mortality and morbidity in the newborn infant.

Secondary objectives

  1. To determine the effectiveness of standardised neonatal resuscitation training programs on changing provider behaviour.

  2. To determine the effect of standardised neonatal resuscitation training programs on knowledge and skills acquisition.

  3. To determine the effect of standardised neonatal resuscitation training programs on knowledge and skills retention.

Planned subgroup analysis

1. Geographical location

  1. Developed world versus developing world.

2. Type of program

  1. Any neonatal resuscitation program (one, two or three above) versus no resuscitation training.

  2. Didactic programs versus skill based programs.

  3. Simulation program versus didactic programs.

  4. Simulation program versus skill based programs.

3. Type of participants

  1. Hospital based healthcare providers;

  2. Community based healthcare providers.
