This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To determine the diagnostic accuracy of digital retinal imaging for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy.

  • mydriatic versus non-mydriatic pupils;

  • localisation of fields;

  • number of fields investigated;

  • observation angle per field;

  • monoscopic versus stereoscopic imaging;

  • multi-colour versus monochromatic mode;

  • training of evaluator (eye care professional like ophthalmologists or optometrists versus other);

  • nature of reference standard;

  • duration of diabetes mellitus;

  • type 1 diabetes mellitus versus type 2 diabetes mellitus.
