This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:
The primary objective of this study will be to compare the effectiveness of different regimens of systemic corticosteroids for the treatment of acute asthma exacerbation in children and adults presenting to an acute care facility. Specific outcomes will include:
- the effect of different systemic corticosteroid regimens on relapse rates, need for hospitalisation, persistence of symptoms, and need for additional β-agonist use; and
- the tolerability of different systemic corticosteroid regimens with regards to compliance and adverse events (specifically vomiting).
