Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

The primary objective will assess, in populations of critically ill patients, whether a single induction dose of etomidate for emergency airway intervention affects mortality.

The secondary objectives will address, in populations of critically ill patients, whether a single induction dose of etomidate for emergency airway intervention affects adrenal gland function, organ dysfunction, or health services utilization (as measured by ICU length of stay (LOS), duration of mechanical ventilation, or vasopressor requirements).

We will repeat analyses within subgroups defined by aetiologies of critical illness.
