  2. Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the efficacy and safety of antiepileptic drugs for primary and secondary prevention of seizures in viral encephalitis. We intend to undertake this review with three broad objectives:

  1. do the AEDs reduce the risk of seizures during the acute illness when used as primary prophylaxis routinely for all patients with suspected or proven viral encephalitis;
  2. does the practice of using primary prophylactic AEDs in all patients with suspected/proven viral encephalitis reduce neurological morbidity and mortality;
  3. do the AEDs reduce the risk of further seizures after the occurrence of at least one seizure in patients with suspected or proven viral encephalitis.
