This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the effects of preventive interventions for depression in chronically physically ill patients, specifically:

  1. to determine the effects of preventive psychological interventions; and
  2. to determine the effects of pharmacological interventions.
