Abstract
This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:
To systematically review evidence examining the methodology of checking reference lists to identify potentially relevant resources for inclusion in systematic reviews. The following questions will be addressed:
1. What is the additional yield of unique relevant material identified through checking reference lists?
2. Is there evidence that the additional unique yield from checking reference lists is greater for particular publication types or study designs?
3. What is the evidence regarding marginal cost, cost-effectiveness, and/or cost-efficiency associated with the methodology of checking reference lists?
