Anionen können „isoliert“ werden – durch reversiblen Einschluss in einem Wirtmolekül zusammen mit einem oder zwei Solvensmolekülen. Kationen und Anionen wie Et4N+ und PF6− lassen sich in Lösung außerdem regelrecht trennen durch Einschluss in verschiedene Kapselmoleküle (siehe Bild).
