Landsat 5 to be decommissioned

Authors

Abstract

After orbiting the planet more than 150,000 times since its launch in 1984, the Landsat 5 Earth observing satellite is being decommissioned due to the recent failure of a gyroscope, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced on 21 December. The 29-year-old satellite originally had an expected design life of 3 years.
