Sunlight-reflecting potential of aerosols overestimated

Abstract

Research into the role of aerosols in the atmospheric energy budget has predominantly been carried out in locations with high total aerosol loads. Less well understood are the effects of aerosols in relatively aerosol-free regions. By measuring the concentrations of aerosols of various sizes in and near Sacramento, Calif., in June 2010, Kassianov et al. found that previous research had been overestimating the sunlight-reflecting potential of atmospheric aerosols in clear, sunny skies.
