Following an analysis of a Martian rock sample that was drilled into by an instrument on board NASA's Curiosity Rover, agency and project scientists announced at a 12 March briefing that they now have evidence indicating that an area near where the rover landed in Gale Crater last August could have once supported ancient microbial life.
