Many studies have focused on how the size and shape of ice crystals in clouds affect the clouds' light-scattering properties, which are important in understanding the effects of clouds on weather and climate; these effects are one of the major sources of uncertainty in climate models. Also important, but less well studied, is how the roughness of ice crystals affects light scattering.
