Summary

Today's development is focusing not only on the reduction of time-to-market period, but in many cases also on the reduction of component mass. More and more, magnesium alloys are used as materials for security related components, i.e. in automotive industry. Therefore, the assessment of the structural durability is very important with regard to the product liability requirements.

Within the scope of the Fraunhofer WISA-project “Leichtbau mit Magnesium”, the use of different magnesium alloys as material for safety components is investigated. In this paper, for a casted vehicle component of the magnesium alloy AS21X some of the steps with regard to the assessment of the structural durability are presented.
