Summary

The Thematic Network “Assessment of Metal Matrix Composites for Innovations” (acronym MMC-ASSESS) has been approved within the 4th Framework Program of the European Commission for a 36 months period starting October 1998. It is focussing on the assessment of this class of heterogeneous materials for applications in all technical fields. A home page “http://mmc-assess.tuwien.ac.at/” is established and will be filled with information on the four MMC categories (particulate, short fibre, continuous fibre and monofilament reinforced metals) and on the topics of processing, test methods, properties, modelling, specification, application, reliability and marketing. 21 European partners from universities, research organisations, industries and national MMC working groups are co-operating with experts outside the consortium and are establishing links to MMC activities in the USA and Eastern Europe. The network is open to all interested in MMC, who are asked to take advantage of the scientific expertise offered.
