Summary

Some few unfavourable technical properties of structural lightweight concrete being mainly connected with its production, consistency and transportation have been overcome by the development of a new technology, where the lightweight aggregate particles are coated with a thin cementitious layer by the application of a special coating technology. Besides the effect of making the aggregates impermeable against water, also a significant increase of the strength of the aggregate particles is obtained. Experimental results on properties of fresh and hardened lightweight concrete made with coated aggregates show that both workability and strength are considerably improved. It is shown that this new type of high-performance lightweight concrete may be produced having a compressive strength higher than 90 MPa while the unit weight remains below 2000 kg/m3.
