Summary

Among the numerous techniques for the processing of ceramic matrix, synthesis via filled polymers have been used for the synthesis of mullite monoliths. This paper describes the preparation of mullite, with low shrinkage and low processing temperature, based on the reaction-bonding of Al and Al2O3 powders with the pyrolysis of a silica polymer precursor. The behaviour of the polymer/Al/Al2O3 mixture is compared with those of polymer/Al2O3 mixture, by means of thermoanalytical and microstructural techniques.
