- defect analysis in ceramics by microwaves
A microwave setup with variable frequency of 20–40 GHz was built up and the microwave absorption dependent on the local position was measured. A broad variety of ceramics was examined.
To knew the propagation of the waves inside the materials it is necessary to measure the dielectric constants of the materials. They were determined with an angle method.
With lenses it is possible to improve the recognisation of faults and cracks. We examined different systems of lenses.
It is important to do the quality control as early as possible. So the unfired bodies should be examined with microwaves. If the water content of unfired ceramics is too high, there are difficulties with microwaves because of absorption. We measured the dependence of the absortion on frequency to find the less absorption, this depends on the sintered material.
