Summary
Using statistics from the International Magnesium Association (IMA), it can be deduced that more than 90% of the shipments of alloy magnesium are consumed in the manufacture of high pressure die castings. Over the next 10 years, high pressure die casting is expected to increase in importance relative to other processes. This paper will therefore deal mainly with the situation relating to high pressure die casting (referred to as “die casting” from hereon), but will also discuss the status of the other processes.
