Summary
A chemical conversion surface treatment based on permanganate and phosphate salts for magnesium alloys (AZ91D and WE43A) has been developed in this work. The process has been optimised for corrosion resistance using Design of Experiments techniques. The morphology and composition of the optimised conversion layers have been analysed. The corrosion behaviour of these layers have been compared with chromated conversions in salt spray fog and electrochemical tests. The Mn-based conversion has resulted to be competitive with the Cr-based conversions concerning corrosion resistance.
