N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are activated during excitatory neurotransmission at most synapses in the central nervous system. Their unique properties allow them to play key roles in synaptic transmission and plasticity; the functional importance of some NMDAR subtypes is becoming clearer.
