Abstract

Edward O Wilson is the most distinguished living evolutionist. He has made seminal contributions to ant taxonomy, to island biogeography, to the importance of pheromones (chemical methods of communication) and to social behaviour (sociobiology). He has also been active in conservation projects, much concerned to promote biodiversity, and he has in later years turned his attention to philosophical and social issues, arguing that evolution provides a firm foundation for the study of ethics and epistemology.
