The genome projects have depended heavily on powerful computers and high-speed networks. Much software was written specifically for them to cover technical requirements from data handling to the presentation of genome data to the scientific community. The projects also spurred the development of new types of computer hardware, which are designed specifically for the needs of genome scientists.
